General Aviation Technical Education Advisory Committee
Choose Aerospace, a non-profit organization with a mission of promoting aviation technical careers, along with Clemson University's EducateWorkforce, the Aviation Technician Education Council (ATEC), ARCS Aviation, labor organizations, high school and technical programs, and industry partners are making a focused effort to build high school pipeline programs to fill workforce development needs. To that end, the team will create and deploy general aviation technical curriculum in high schools and technical colleges across the U.S. and build pathways to immediate employment and/or opportunities to work towards additional professional goals including mechanic certification.
The Choose Aerospace curriculum will align with emerging FAA Mechanic Airman Certification Standards to cover the general knowledge, risk management, and skill required for mechanic certification. It will facilitate a hybrid approach, combining traditional delivery methods (classroom, hard copy textbook, and in-person labs) with e-learning methods (video lecture, e-book, virtual and augmented reality simulations and exercises) using a nationally deployable e-learning platform.
Through ATEC's network of FAA-certificated aviation maintenance schools and industry partners, Choose Aerospace will promote the curriculum in furtherance of wide-spread adoption in high schools, and create the opportunity for FAA-certificated aviation maintenance technician schools to offer transfer credit to secondary students completing the general curriculum.
Through engagement with urban advocacy organizations, vocational training programs, and trade associations representing underrepresented talent, the team will focus on deployment of the general aviation maintenance curriculum in underserved communities, increase awareness, and recruit diverse populations into aviation maintenance careers with a focus on engaging rural, underrepresented, and military-connected populations.
The curriculum will be pilot tested by a handful of high school programs across the U.S. in fall 2021. The goal is for the content to be widely available for adoption in the fall of 2022.
Choose Aerospace is currently selecting advisory committee members to provide feedback on content as it is developed, and as we ready for the fall pilot. Initial duties and time commitment requirements are as follows:
Advisory committee volunteers are asked to submit the following commitment form to participate.
